Textiles

Nigerian textile traditions have a rich history dating back centuries, with various ethnic groups developing distinctive crafts. The British colonial era introduced European fabrics and Dutch wax prints, affecting the industry. Post-independence, Nigeria experienced significant growth, with the industry employing over 500,000 people across over 175 mills. However, the industry faced decline due to economic liberalization, infrastructure challenges, and smuggling. The contemporary revival has seen renewed interest in Nigerian textiles, with younger Nigerians embracing traditional textile arts, fashion industry growth, digital opportunities, and government initiatives aiming to revitalize the sector.
